Meet the DJs- David Cubine, “Dave’s Deep Dives”

WRFL would like you to meet David Cubine, the DJ behind Dave’s Deep Dives.

You can tune into this show for a mix of rock, blues, americana and more on Wednesdays from 10am to noon on WRFL.

How long have you been a WRFL DJ?

Did a handful of shows in Fall 2019, but just started full-time this January 2020.

Do you have any frequent guests/co-hosts? What’s your dynamic like?

First and foremost- musically interesting and enlightening. The best comment I could get is, “I have never heard that version of that song,” or “That’s one of my favorites, but I have never heard that played on the radio before.” In the future, I’ll be bringing in some area musician friends and contacts to talk about their music and especially about their musical influences- and playing those influences for the audience.

Why did you join WRFL?

I did a guest DJ spot on WRFL’s sister station, WUKY, and really enjoyed the experience of introducing the listeners to some of my favorite music.

What do you play on your show?

I like to play alternate, live recordings, or rarely heard versions of a wide range of rock, blues, americana, singer-songwriter, jazz and new acoustic music. Hope to add themes and more historical blocks in the future.

Why do you play what you do on your show? What sparked that interest?

I like to let the music do most of the talking, but I’ll add background information about the songs, where the recording was made, artist information, and influences that those musicians both give and receive.

Who are some of your favorite musical artists?

Allman Brothers, John Coltrane, Jason Isbell, Amazing Rhythm Aces, Tony Rice, Jethro Tull, Rosanne Cash, Miles Davis, Santana.

What’s your process for planning your show?

During the week, I’ll go through my musical library or run tunes through my head that I hope to play the next show. By Mondays, I’ll also go though the WRFL recent playlist for those tunes to mix/fit in with mine.

What do you do outside of WRFL?

I have a multimedia design business, play music professionally, and teach martial arts.

Do you have a favorite memory of something that happened at WRFL, either during your show or at a WRFL event?

On my first day, I received a listener call who said he almost had to pull his car over to the side of the road because he was so amazed that a song I had just played by his favorite band, the Amazing Rhythm Aces, was the first time he had ever heard them played on the radio.

What other WRFL shows/DJs do you like listening to?

Vinyl Interiors with Revell Carr, WRFL Live, and Blue Yodel #9.

What do you want listeners to take away from your show?

I love to share or turn people on to music to they haven’t been exposed to, or play them songs they were unfamiliar with from artists they already listen to. WRFL is the perfect place for those who love listening to a wide variety of genres and hearing those hidden musical gems.

“The radio is broken. It don’t work anymore. We’ll never get back to the Earth no more” —Frank Zappa

What do you hope for the future of your show?

Hope to add themes and more historical blocks in the future.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Favorite musical quote:

You can have anything you want

You can drift, you can dream, even walk on water

Anything you want

You can own everything you see

Sell your soul for complete control

Is that really what you need?

You can lose yourself this night

See inside there is nothing to hide

Turn and face the light
