This next DJ we want you to meet is currently serving as WRFL’s Volunteer Director. Her name is Emme Dupree, and you can hear her show Squids Will Be Squids on Thursdays from 8-10pm on WRFL.
How long have you been a WRFL DJ?
Two years… I think? I can’t remember because I didn’t officially become a DJ until the end of last year, but I went to my brother Edison’s show all the time since freshman year.
Do you have any frequent guests or co-hosts? What’s your dynamic like? Edison, who was the original host of the show, is now my cohost. We keep the vibe fun and chill and it changes from week to week, you never what you’re going to get.
Is there any butting heads with being siblings sharing a show?
Absolutely not. We get along great. We don’t talk much on air but when we do we have great banter.
Why did you join WRFL?
My brother Edison was a DJ and I would hang out with him during his shows and then I decided I wanted to have my own show as well. Which lead to me cohosting Squids Will Be Squids with him for a year and then ultimately me taking over.
What do you play on your show?
I like to kind of “wing” my show week to week. It all depends on my mood and what I feel would fit the vibe of the day or week. I usually play indie, pop, or alternative rock but ya never know what you’re going to get.
Where did the name Squids Will Be Squids come from?
It came from a children’s book titled Squids Will Be Squids by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith. It’s basically a ridiculous morals book. That was our favorite kids’ book as children.
Why do you play what you do on your show? What sparked that interest?
My family has always emphasized non-mainstream music ever since I was a child and even though we are not musically inclined we all love to listen to music and discover new artists.
Who are some of your favorite musical artists?
I really like First Aid Kit, Olita, Little Boots, Poppy, The Arctic Monkeys, and Vampire Weekend.
What’s your process for planning your show?
I usually listen and compile a huge playlist of music for each show cycle and then when it comes time to do my show I just play whatever music is on there that appeals to me that day. I wing it but I always have a huge playlist ready to go. Lately I’ve been doing something I call “CD Roulette,” I pick a CD and I never know
What do you do outside of WRFL?
I am a Media Arts and Studies Major so I like to be creative with photography, making videos, and painting. I also love watching reality TV.
What reality TV shows do you like?
Oh my god, what reality TV shows don’t I like? My current obsessions are Hell’s Kitchen and Love Island. Those are the ones I’ve been grinding out.
British people, man. They give drama, but with class.
Do you have a favorite memory of something that happened at WRFL, either during your show or at a WRFL event?
I really enjoyed tabling at this past Pride Festival. I met a lot of really cool people and was able to spread the word about WRFL at that event. I had a lot of people come up like, “I love WRFL!” I just had a good time tabling at that one.
What other WRFL shows or DJs do you like listening to? Why?
NO! AH! because the DJ is really hot and amazing.
Another show I like is Hammi’s Matterhorn Mix because he makes me feel like I’m on Love Island.
Do you have a “Most Interesting Phone Call” story from your time as a DJ?
One time I had a phone call from a group of Vietnam Veterans who requested a Batman Theme song remix because they use to listen to it in the army. It was definitely unexpected and fun.
They called me back after, like “Thank you this was amazing.” Anything for the troops, man.
Can you share a story of an interaction with a listener of your show?
Another DJ actually DM’ed me saying that my show was her favorite and that she’s been taking some songs from it and that made me feel complete as a DJ. Like that’s the goal, that’s the ultimate goal. It made me feel so good.
What do you want listeners to take away from your show?
I just hope I can expose them to new artists and genres that they end up liking and following more closely.
What do you hope for the future of your show?
That people still enjoy listening to it and it stays fun and chill.
