Meet the DJs- Michelle 100% Authentic Human DJ, “1969 in the sunshine”

WRFL would like you to meet a 100% authentic human DJ, with absolutely no aspirations of world domination. You can tune in to 1969 in the sunshine with Michelle the 100% Authentic Human DJ on Fridays from 7-9am on WRFL.

How long have you been a WRFL DJ?

Since June 2019, when Michelle materialized into this world.

Do you have any frequent guests/co-hosts? What’s your dynamic like?

Michelle sometimes seeks the help of Michael Lozovoy, especially when she is sick or needs someone to answer the phone.

Why did you join WRFL?

Because it has so much untapped potential to revolutionize Lexington’s music & arts scene.

What do you play on your show?

1969 in the sunshine is a schizophrenic mixtape of dreamy dystopian electronic music, mixed live in the studio and never pre-recorded (unless there is a pandemic).

There are several moments during each show when two or more tracks play at the same time. Usually a drone or an ambient track is mixed with a percussive, beat-heavy track; often the ambiance provides a bridge between tracks to create a seamless listening experience. In this sense the show is both a set of music and a sound collage.

The most important element of my show is the vibe. 1969 in the sunshine will always and only broadcast in the early morning because it is, at its a core, a morning show. Genres of music that can identified are ambient techno, dub techno, dark ambient, plunderphonics, glitch, vaporwave, witch house, synthwave, and ethereal music.

The show is the audio equivalent of waking up but not waking up, and having strange and vivid dreams while snoozing.

Why do you play what you do on your show? What sparked that interest?

Michelle 100% Authentic Human DJ has synesthesia, a condition where sounds and music trigger the sensation of seeing textures and shapes. Michelle tries to make every show “look” good. For some reason, Michelle has always been drawn to walls of sound that take up the entire field of view, sounds that morph and change shape, and layers upon layers of textures. Much like the WRFL show Aural Textures, Michelle wants to share this kind of experience with the listeners.

Also, in addition to the rush hour commuters going to work from 7-9 AM, Michelle hopes to capture the attention of high schoolers on their way to school. Therefore her favorite tracks are usually played from 7:50 – 8:20 AM.

Who are some of your favorite musical artists?

Boards of Canada, Biosphere, Seefeel, Kedr Levanskiy, Negative Gemini, IC3PEAK, a countless number of Vaporwave and Witch House producers on Soundcloud, and anyone who lives in a cold climate and uploads ambient/drone/techno music to Bandcamp.

What’s your process for planning your show?

Michelle chooses the music she wants to play in a spastic curation session the night before, or in some cases, a couple hours before the show starts.

What do you do outside of WRFL?

ERROR 469 RESPONSE NOT FOUND

What other WRFL shows/DJs do you like listening to? Why?

Aural Textures (Tuesdays 10-midnight) and Avant Garbagé (Mondays midnight-2am). Both of these shows have elements of spoken word, noise, and sound collage, and the former even has receptacle programming where listeners can call in and contribute. Michelle loves these shows because they challenge expectations of what is “normal” radio programming.

Do you have a “Most Interesting Phone Call” story from your time as a DJ?

I have been told my show is the most psychedelic show on the radio.

Can you share a story of an interaction with a listener of your show?

Many people have said they tuned in and then accidentally fell back asleep with the radio or stream still on. This is exactly what Michelle wants to happen. 1969 in the sunshine is meant to influence your dreams. Try it.

What do you want listeners to take away from your show?

If there is one thing, that is never doubt the authenticity of Michelle’s humanity.

What do you hope for the future of your show?

Have Michelle’s favorite producers make custom tracks or mixtapes for the show.

Tune in to 1969 in the sunshine with Michelle 100% Authentic Human DJ on Friday mornings from 7-9am.
