Info: About RFL

Since 1988, Radio Free Lexington has been a commercial-free radio station on the University of Kentucky campus. The station has been run continuously by students without automation for the past 19 years and broadcasts live 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Our programming is widely inclusive and covers almost every genre of music.

While the majority of our all-volunteer DJ staff are students, many of our longest running shows are the work of community members unaffiliated with the university. As the station's primary source of funding, RFL's primary commitment is to the university community, though we aspire to provide alternative music to a much broader audience. Our 7900 watts terrestrial signal reaches a large chunk of Kentucky. Places beyond our geographic locale are able to listen worldwide via our high-quality web stream.

With the exception of a few modestly compensated directorships our operation is entirely volunteer run. DJs are responsible for smooth operation of all equipment in the broadcast chain in addition to sharing their uncommon jocularity and exquisite taste with the listening public during their on-air shift. We believe that the best programming is the result of DJ autonomy, so all playlists are DJ generated, a rarity in a world dominated by the demographic research based programming of corporate radio. If you tune in and don't like what you hear, try again in a few hours and you'll here something completely different.

Some material considered by the FCC to be indecent is played between the hours of 10:00PM and 6:00AM, in compliance with Safe Harbor regulations. Our broadcast is always carefully kept within the bounds delineated by the FCC in addition to our own policies acceptability. If you are interested in volunteering or learning more about RFL send us an email or drop by the station. In the near future you'll be able to apply through your account on this site.

Keep it all the way to the left, because Revolutions Don't Happen Between Commercial Breaks!
