Info: Frequently Asked Questions

Sometimes I listen to RFL and it's prodigiously rad, and other times your broadcast makes me question the validity of music as a human endeavor. What gives?

Good question. You see, RFL is dedicated to being a completely free radio station with the most diverse programming in the region. We play things on the air that you won't hear anywhere else on the radio dial. The DJs have almost complete autonomy in the selection of music that goes over the airwaves, and every DJ has their own tastes. Corporate stations may play on the order of one or two thousand different songs a year, where a station like RFL will play hundreds of thousands a year. RFL aims to bring you music you haven't heard before, and would miss out on otherwise. Take a look at our schedule and listen to a variety of our shows, and you'll very likely find a DJ or two whose taste meshes with your own. While we hope this is the case, we would be even happier to hear that you had discovered something completely unknown to you previously, and come to love it. If there is still something you're really missing on our airwaves, we'd love to have you come fill the void in our lineup. Which ties in nicely with our next question...

How do I become a DJ at RFL?

First, you need to fill out an application. The best way to do so at the moment is to visit the the station during office hours and pick up an application form. You can also email our training director. In the near future (some time mid-September) you'll be able to apply through your account on this site.

Please do not continue to contact the training director if you have submitted an application. Yes, we received your application. There are, however, a number of reasons that you wouldn't be contacted immediately. So please, hold your horses. Remember, patience is a virtue. We seek honest people, who appreciate a diverse range of music and are interested in expanding their musical horizons. You should have a commitment to the station and the philosophy behind it.

Do DJs at RFL get paid?

No. All DJs are volunteers who donate their time. Some directors positions are modestly compensated, and most of those directors have on-air slots, but no one is compensated for their DJ work.

If I started DJing at RFL, would I have to do a really late night shift?

This depends, but more than likely a DJ first starting out will start in a sub-optimal (depending on your perspective) timeslot. DJs that have been with us the longest and put the most into the station have seniority over the "good" (afternoon/night/weekend) time slots. It's worth noting that morning slots, while unpopular with some college students, are widely listened to by Lexingtonians (particularly commuters). DJs just starting out have to pay their dues like everyone else that came before them, and this typically means morning slots.

My band is touring around, and we'd like to do a show in Lexington. Can you guys hook us up?

This is predicated on financial realities, venue availability, and promotional circumstances. Please contact our promotions director.

My band also has a CD that we'd like for you guys to play on air, where should we send it?
