WRFL turns 33! Look back at our history

Happy birthday WRFL!! 33 years ago today, on March 7, 1988, WRFL made its on-air debut. Be sure to check out WRFL’s Instagram @wrfl881 over the next 24 hours for stories from past and present DJs, directors, and listeners.

Want to look back at the station’s entire 33-year history? We searched for every issue we could find of the RiFLe, WRFL’s long-running zine that predates the station’s first FM radio broadcast, going all the way back to 1987 (a year before the station started broadcasting!) and we’ve uploaded them all. Check out the RiFLe Digital Library on our website and you’ll see a gallery of all the covers and you can click on any of them to view the entire zine. It is gorgeous and you should really look through it if you haven’t already. You’ll learn or rediscover a lot about the history of the station.

In 2008, for WRFL’s 20th birthday, author and filmmaker (and WRFL + UK alumna!) Ayser Salman produced and directed WRFL: How It Went Down, a documentary short about the founding of the station. You can watch it here:

Finally, we know everyone looks forward to WRFL’s Birthday Bash each year, and although health precautions prevented us from holding an in-person event this year, we can’t wait to see you all again when it is safe to do so.

Thank you to all our listeners throughout the years for your love and support, and here’s to (at least!) 33 more years!!
