Meet the DJs- Maggie Stinson, “Canned Sardines”

While everyone is stocking up on canned goods, WRFL is stocking up on Canned Sardines.

You can tune into Canned Sardines with DJ Maggie Stinson on Thursdays from midnight to 2am.

How long have you been a WRFL DJ?

I’ve been a DJ since last November.

Why did you join WRFL?

I obviously love music, but I was really drawn to the whole vibe of WRFL. I think that our mission to share music that isn’t conventionally popular with the good people of Lexington is very wholesome.

What do you play on your show?

I play a lot of indie rock and pop. It’s vague, I know, but I don’t like to restrict myself too much with a general format show. If I think a song is a bop, I’ll play it.

Why do you play what you do on your show? What sparked that interest?

I think my desire for discovering new artists is the biggest influence on the music that I play.

Who are some of your favorite musical artists?

I’m currently into Mitski, Trash Panda, Bad Suns, Salads, HUNNY, The F16s, Vista Kicks, The Libertines, The Vaccines, The Young Veins… I could go on forever. My music taste is always evolving so this list will probably change within the next week.

What’s your process for planning your show?

I typically listen to random playlists on Spotify throughout the week to get some inspiration. When I find something that I like, I’ll scrounge around a bit to find more music like it.

What do you do outside of WRFL?

I don’t do much outside of WRFL. Like most students at UK, I’m usually doing homework and spending all of my flex at Starbucks.

Do you have a favorite memory of something that happened at WRFL, either during your show or at a WRFL event?

I had Puccini’s pizza at my first general staff meeting and it changed my life.

What other WRFL shows/DJs do you like listening to? Why?

I love listening to Disco Heaven and Real Vampire Hours. Claire and Camille just make their shows so fun to listen to!

Can you share a story of an interaction with a listener of your show?

I think my most dedicated listener is probably my mom. As far as interaction goes, she’ll occasionally hype me up with a text like “great song. good choice”.

What do you want listeners to take away from your show?

I just want listeners to enjoy what I play! I like to think that someone is rolling through a Taco Bell drive-thru in the middle of the night and absolutely jamming to my music.

**What do you hope for the future of your show?

I hope that Canned Sardines develops a following someday. The idea that listeners might actually look forward to my show is super neat to me.

Tune into Canned Sardines with Maggie Stinson on Thursdays from midnight to 2am on WRFL.
