The Supreme Court of Kentucky announced yesterday it will hold its October oral arguments at the University of Kentucky’s J. David Rosenberg College of Law Wednesday and Thursday Oct. 15-16.
According to a press release from the court, the proceedings are open to the public, either in-person or via livestream, and will take place in the law building’s G. Chad Perry III Grand Courtroom Wednesday at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and Thursday at 10 and 11 a.m.
“Holding oral arguments in communities is an opportunity to educate the public on the work of the Supreme Court and the Judicial Branch,” writes Supreme Court Clerk Katie Bing. “Civic outreach can improve understanding of the role of courts in society.”
The court’s shift from its traditional setting at the Capitol is part of an ongoing effort to educate more people about Kentucky’s judiciary, with the state’s justices having previously held September’s oral arguments at Centre College. The public education initiative began in 1985 when the court traveled to Louisville to conduct hearings, and since then, sessions are periodically held across the state.
