One of the most crucial aspects of audiovisual media like film, television, theatrical performances, and video games is the music that accompanies it. The rhythms we hear as we experience these pieces of artwork deeply affect how we feel each individual scene. Maybe you’re behind a screen, controller in hand, as you at long last take on that final boss that you’ve been anticipating for hours upon hours of gameplay. Maybe you’re tearfully stuffing your face with handfuls of popcorn as you watch two characters experience a tragic breakup over and over again, in and out of time. Or maybe you’re watching the opening title theme for your favorite show as you gear up to get a load of exactly what kind of dramatic revelation is gonna be all over your Twitter feed this week. Regardless of the medium, and regardless of the genre, one thing is abundantly clear: these songs have real power over us as viewers. They make us feel a certain kind of emotion that the creators and directors of whatever it is you’re watching or playing wanted you to feel in a very particular kind of way, whether it be determination, heartbreak, suspense, or any other kind of feeling that you can name.
To pay tribute to the unique artform of the soundtrack, WRFL is currently hosting a specialty programming event called “Soundtrack September,” in which our DJs will be bringing you the greatest cuts both created for and inspired by movies, television shows, and video games.
